BONE HEALTH OPTIMIZATION IN THE PERIOPERATIVE SPINE PATIENT: FINDINGS FROM A SINGLE ACADEMIC INSTITUTION

by Ryan Rahman
Category: Medicine
Abstract – A high prevalence of poor bone quality in the older population makes spine surgery incredibly challenging. We retrospectively reviewed perioperative spine patients referred to a single academic institution's bone health clinic for bone health optimization. 204 patients were seen at the bone health clinic for spine-related reasons and of these, 72 (35.2%) were referred for perioperative bone optimization. 83.3% of patients were prescribed one or more medications. Several factors, including contraindications, patient preference, and insurance, influence treatment choice. Bone health issues are complex and need to be monitored by a multidisciplinary team.
