DR. LAWRENCE STANBERRY

Dr. Stanberry (M.D., Ph.D.) is the Associate Dean for International Programs and Director of the Programs in Global Health at Columbia University’s Vagelos College of Physicians and Surgeons. He serves as Columbia University’s Faculty Liaison for Pfizer Vaccine Research and Development.

Previously he served as the Reuben S. Carpentier Professor and Chairman of the Department of Pediatrics at the Vagelos College of Physicians and Surgeons at Columbia University, and Pediatrician-in-Chief of the NewYork-Presbyterian/Morgan Stanley Children’s Hospital (February 2008 – June 2018); the John Sealy Distinguished Professor and Chairman of Pediatrics and Director of the Sealy Center for Vaccine Development at the University of Texas Medical Branch at Galveston (October 2000 – February 2008); and the Albert B. Sabin Professor of Pediatrics and Director of the Division of Infectious Diseases at the Cincinnati Children’s Medical Center and University of Cincinnati College of Medicine (June 1995 – October 2000).

Dr. Stanberry has authored over 200 scientific articles and chapters. He has served on numerous advisory boards and review panels including serving as the chair of the Vaccine Study Section and the Pediatrics Review Panel at the National Institutes of Health. He has received research funding from the National Institutes of Health, the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, numerous vaccine, pharmaceutical and biotech companies, and the Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation. He is a pioneer in the areas of therapeutic vaccine development to control chronic viral diseases, topical microbicides/pre-exposure prophylaxis for the prevention of reproductive tract infections, and the development of herpes simplex virus and influenza virus vaccines. He has extensive experience in drug and vaccine development ranging from preclinical animal model studies through phase 3 multinational clinical trials.

His current work focuses on the preparedness of children’s hospitals globally to prevent, detect, and respond to infections with pandemic potential.

DR. BOGDAN CHIVA GIURCA

Dr. Bogdan Chiva Giurca (M.D.) is the Global Alliance and Clinical Champion Lead at the National Academy for Social Prescribing.
​
He is the Founder and Chair of the NHS Social Prescribing Champion Scheme (2016-2021) consisting of thousands of UK junior doctors and medical students. Over a four-year period, the scheme has delivered over 700 teaching sessions in all UK medical schools, as well as developing a National Consensus for Teaching Social Prescribing. As the founder of the world’s first ‘International Social Prescribing Day’, Bogdan has acted as an international champion, raising awareness of the subject globally. With support from the United Nations, World Health Organisation, Vatican Commission for Health and several international stakeholders, Bogdan has contributed to a newly established Global Alliance for Social Prescribing launched in February 2021.

Working with a team of 5,000+ young doctors and medical students internationally Bogdan’s work has influenced national healthcare policy and has driven key changes within the medical school curriculum, contributing to several peer-reviewed publications and policy documents, including the NHS Long Term Plan (a 10-year Road Map for the English National Healthcare System), the Personalised Care Model, General Practice Partnership Review, as well as authoring three books on medical education. In recognition of his work, Bogdan has been awarded numerous scholarships, grants, and honorariums for his community impact including a community award from His Royal Highness, The Prince of Wales.
 
Bogdan is currently working as a doctor within the London, South Thames Foundation School, Global Alliance and Clinical Champion Lead at the National Academy for Social Prescribing, as well as a Collaborator for the Harvard Global Health Institute.

OUR FIRST IYRC SCHOLARSHIP RECIPIENT!​
The next 100,000 JPY scholarship will be awarded to the best overall project at the Fall 2021 conference.​
Details and eligibility:
  • The scholarship is available to first authors of research projects, community projects, and narratives only. Case study participants are not eligible.
  • Students who present and publish their research projects, community projects, and narratives at the Fall 2021 IYRC are automatically eligible.​ 
  • The scholarship will be awarded based on the merits of your paper and presentation, as determined by the IYRC directors.
  • Only one scholarship is available per conference.
  • Scholarship recipients are not eligible for subsequent scholarships from the IYRC.
  • The scholarship amount is 100,000 Japanese yen. If the recipient lives outside of Japan, the funds will be converted to their local currency.
  • The recipient is responsible for any taxes incurred upon receiving the funds.
